EQUINE PHOTOGRAPHY

OUR PASSION FOR HORSES

It is our lifelong love of horses, coupled with twenty plus years of professional photography that inspires our sensitive and beautiful equine portraits; images that effortlessly reflect a natural empathy with both horse and rider.

Our commissioned work has taken us to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez (Spain), to horse-whisperer Jean Francoise Pignon (France) and, in Portugal, our private work ranges from the Golega horse fair to beaches in Algarve and stud farms in Alentejo.

As well as shooting in natural light, our exciting, fresh approach to flash photography allows us to create distinctive, dramatic images of you and your horse.

Our passion for equine photography has given rise to the Jo Hansford Photography Young Rider Sponsorship Programme, developed from the desire to offer a helping hand to aspiring young riders and to give something back to the equestrian community. We are committed to supporting talented, passionate young riders and it gives us so much pleasure working with Natasha Baker OBE and Ellie Fredericks, sharing their respective journeys. More information can be found on our sponsorship programme page.

We are available for commissions throughout the UK and our equine portrait fees start from £395 – please contact us for a full price guide.

KIND WORDS

Helen and Amelia with their horse & pony, Watson and Hercules

What an amazing experience! Both our photoshoots had a touch of magic about them. Jo and Nic made us all feel very special, making the day one we will never forget.

Natasha Baker MBE

Jo and Nic are truly amazing photographers. They know just how to put you at ease and manage to capture every magical moment. They are patient and friendly and know what works well for every individual. Working with horses can prove challenging sometimes, but they’re able to adapt to every situation. Their pictures are breath-taking and I wouldn’t use anybody else.’

Jess with her horses, Tockas and Joey

My photo shoot with Jo and Nic was an occasion never to forget. I felt so comfortable in their presence and the outcome was amazing! All the photos that were taken were brilliant and really managed to capture the horses’ characters and my relationship with them. I can’t thank them enough and would recommend it to anyone!

YOUR QUESTIONS

Where will my shoot take place?

We work on location; this can be at the stables, at your home or a nearby location – if you have somewhere special in mind, let us know! We’re always interested in exploring different settings.

How far do you travel for a shoot?

We travel throughout the UK. We don’t charge when visiting clients within 100 miles of Bristol; for commissions further afield, we charge £0.50 per additional mile; we will confirm any travel costs at the time of booking.

Do you use flash lighting during the session?

75% of our photography uses natural light. However, if you like our beautifully lit equine portraits, we will need to use flash. Most horses are fine with this, even very sensitive ones. We always take things slowly, show the horse our equipment and test the flash a few times to make sure they’re acclimatised before we start.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my photoshoot?

The weather is one of those unpredictable things here in UK!

We always keep an eye on forecasts in the run up to shoots, and will contact you if we feel its better to postphone, In light showers we can often go ahead and shoot; if heavy rain or strong winds are forecast we may need to postphone.

What about clothing, hair and make up for my photoshoot?

We will send you our Clothing Guide once your booking is confirmed, we will also discuss and plan this with you in our phone consultation beforehand.

We want you to feel great for your session, for some people that means a visit to their hairdresser beforehand, for others, they want to look very natural.

What if I don't want to be in the photographs?

Thats absolutely fine, we can focus on your horse! We may still suggest having a few photographs with your horse to capture your bond, but this is entirely up to you.

How long does it take for our photographs to be ready?

Your photos are normally ready in approximately 2-3 weeks. In off-peak season, this can be quicker and during our busiest times it may take a little longer. We value the quality and finish of your photographs over speed.

How do we view our photographs?

We host viewings at our base in Bristol and we encourage all our clients to visit us here, as we have examples of the printing, frame mouldings and albums to hand. It is always great fun talking through the images, reliving the fun of the shoot and deciding which pictures to order.

I won’t be able to come to Bristol for a viewing – can you come to me?

’Yes’ is the simple answer. Many of our clients are super-busy and whilst we would always say that visiting us in Bristol offers the best experience, we understand that isn’t always possible; on-location viewings are available at £150.

How much should I budget for additional prints and albums?

Be prepared to fall in love with more images than you imagine! With a full range of hand-made frames and fine art printing that best displays the beautiful images, we tend to find that clients spend in the region of £500 – £1,000 on finished artwork.

How long do you keep the original files?

We keep your image files for twelve months and we will contact you at the end of that time to check you have everything you need. We often find that birthdays and Christmas are a great excuse for a few more prints!
