EQUINE PHOTOGRAPHY

OUR PASSION FOR HORSES

Our passion for equine photography stems from Jo’s lifelong love of horses. The sensitive images we create reflect her natural empathy with the spirit and majesty of these incredible animals. Working on location, both in countryside and stable settings, we capture images that illustrate the close bond shared by horse and rider, producing beautiful photographic works of art filled with personality and emotion.

Tailoring each shoot to the individual, we know how to tell your story and create a set of images that become more and more precious over time. Our unique skill set blends photographic expertise with a deep understanding of horses and the people who love them.

As well as shooting in natural light, an exciting, fresh approach to flash photography allows us to create distinctive, dramatic images of you and your horse.

We’re proud to have previously photographed UK Eventing legends Mary and Emily King, Paralympian Natasha Baker, The Royal Andulusian School of Equestrian Art, and the world-renowned horse whisperer, Jean Francois Pignon.

Our work has also been used by celebrated global equine brands such as Cavalor.

KIND WORDS

Helen and Amelia with their horse & pony, Watson and Hercules

What an amazing experience! Both our photoshoots had a touch of magic about them. Jo and Nic made us all feel very special, making the day one we will never forget.

Natasha Baker MBE

Jo and Nic are truly amazing photographers. They know just how to put you at ease and manage to capture every magical moment. They are patient and friendly and know what works well for every individual. Working with horses can prove challenging sometimes, but they’re able to adapt to every situation. Their pictures are breath-taking and I wouldn’t use anybody else.’

My photo shoot with Jo and Nic was an occasion never to forget. I felt so comfortable in their presence and the outcome was amazing! All the photos that were taken were brilliant and really managed to capture the horses’ characters and my relationship with them. I can’t thank them enough and would recommend it to anyone!

YOUR QUESTIONS

Where will my shoot take place?
Most of our equine shoots take place around the location where the horse is stabled. If you have concerns about the suitability of your yard, stables and the surroundings, just let us know.

We love planning the finer details of our shoots with you and we’re always open to ideas.

We’re very happy to travel for shoots and include up to 40 miles travel (from BS3 1LG) in our session fees. Beyond this, mileage is charged at 45p/mile. If several of you would like a session, you’re welcome to split the travel costs.

How should I prepare my horse for our session?
Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll provide a separate information sheet about preparing for your shoot. In brief, we suggest you bath your horse the morning of your shoot, then keep him or her stabled until we arrive.
We’ll usually use a halter for some photographs and bridle for others, so a clean halter (ideally black or brown leather or a neutral colour like blue/brown) and a clean bridle is essential, along with a saddle if you’d like some ridden shots. It’s also a good idea to have a few treats around to keep your horse attentive during the shoot.
Should I ride my horse before the photoshoot?
If your horse tends to be spirited, we suggest lunging or riding on the morning of the shoot, before you bath him or her. This should take the edge of his or her energy.
What happens if my horse won’t stand still or misbehaves?
This isn’t something you need to worry about at all. We’ve worked with many different breeds and temperaments of horse, from highly-strung racehorses to ‘hot’ Lusitano or Spanish stallions. We’re patient, flexible and happy to work with what each model is willing to do.
Do you use flash lighting which may scare my horse?
75% of our photography uses natural light. However, if you like our beautifully lit equine portraits, we will need to use flash. Most horses are fine with this, even very sensitive ones. We always take things slowly, show the horse our equipment and test the flash a few times to make sure they’re acclimatised before we start.
What if I own more than one horse?
No problem! Just let us know how many horses you would like photographed before the session and we’ll work out how much time will be required.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my photoshoot?
As you probably know, the weather is one of those unpredictable things here in UK. Even forecasters get it wrong, and in the space of a day, things can change from heavy showers to glorious sunshine!

In light rain, we normally decide to go ahead and dodge the showers, but if it looks like a torrential downpour is brewing, we may decide to postpone. On a windy day, we’ll seek out some more sheltered spots for your photographs, using the wind to our advantage to create a bit of drama.

What clothing do you recommend for me?
We will send you some detailed information about clothing once your booking is confirmed. Briefly, we suggest 2-3 outfit changes, ranging from casual attire to something a little smarter. That said, we want you to feel totally relaxed and comfortable, so do choose clothing that reflects your personality and style.
What about hair and makeup?
We want you to feel great during your shoot, so we think investing in a little pampering is money well spent! We’ve been photographers for a long time, so we can recommend hair and makeup artists for most locations in and around Bristol – just ask for details.
What if I don’t want to be in the photographs?
Even if you’re camera shy, we suggest having at least a few photos taken with your horse. We think it’s important to capture the bond you share, especially if your horse feels like part of your family. However, we’re also happy to place more focus on getting great headshots of your horse, along with some liberty shots in his or her field.
Is it ok to bring along my partner, children or dogs?
Yes, that’s absolutely fine – we love capturing families with their four-legged friends! It’s better if you let us know in advance how many people will be present for the shoot, so we can ensure we allocate enough time.
How many photographs do you take?
We usually take a few hundred images during a session then edit this down to around 100 for your viewing, depending on the number of models.
How long does it take for our photographs to be ready?
Your photos are normally ready in approximately two weeks. In off-peak season, this can be quicker and during our busiest times it may take a little longer. We value the quality and finish of your photographs over speed.
How do we view our photographs?
Most of our clients come to us in Bristol for viewings. It makes for a fun, relaxing morning or afternoon out and you’ll have the chance to enjoy your photographs over tea and biscuits in our viewing room. If this isn’t possible, we also have an online gallery for sharing.
Can I share the photos on social media?

If we post some of your photographs on social media, we’re happy for you to share them from our page, but please don’t just download images from Facebook or our website. We want them to look their best!

If you wish to share them yourselves, we also have options to buy digital copies of your photographs.

Are you insured?
Yes, we have full public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
How do I pay?
We accept bank transfer, cheque, cash or credit card. Payment for your shoot is due at the time of booking.
