Our Young Rider Sponsorship programme developed from a desire to give something back to the equestrian community. We’re committed to supporting talented, passionate young riders and want to help those who need a little extra support and inspiration.

Every year, three riders aged 14-26 receive sponsorship, support and advice designed to help them take their equestrian skills to the next level.

Pictured left, Amelia James with her horse ‘Jennie’, who was our first Young Sponsored Rider in 2014.

Whether dressage, eventers or show-jumpers, young riders face huge emotional challenges, such as competition nerves and disappointment when things go wrong.

We partnered with the British para-equestrian and Olympic gold medallist, Natasha Baker MBE, to provide specialist mentoring that will equip our young riders with the skills and resilience they need to succeed.

“I am so thrilled at the idea of passing on my knowledge to young riders. I can’t wait to help them reach their full potential. After the joy of winning three gold medals at Rio, it would be another dream come true if I could inspire these talented young people to fulfil their own dreams and aspirations.”

As well as an equine photoshoot with us and a branded horse rug and saddlepad, each of these riders receives ongoing mentoring and support throughout 2019.

Lottie Roberts, 18, from Broadway, Cotswolds, is a young eventer, and recently moved up from ponies having bought her first horse, ‘Sallybog Pointilliste’ (Sally), whom she competed her first BE100 on last October as a 6-year-old. Lottie’s goals are to be selected with Sal to compete on the U18 Central team and step up to BE Novice.

Lottie is also a keen tetrathlete, having represented Central England at four international tetrathlons. Amazing!

I’m beyond excited and grateful to have been chosen as a Young Sponsored Rider! I can’t wait to work with Jo, Nic, and Natasha over the next year, especially as I know the mentoring sessions will be invaluable. I’m incredibly honored to be supported by Jo Hansford Photography and it has made me even more excited for the season ahead’

Ellie Fredericks, 17, is from Devizes, Wiltshire, and has produced and competed many horses through her riding career to date. Ellie is currently competing her main horse ‘Mandorior’ at BE Novice and 2*; last year Ellie also brought eventer ‘Marley’ back into work on behalf of her eventing mum Lucinda, and went on to win her first event Barbury Open Novice with him, then also finished 5th in her first Intermediate, as the youngest rider competing!

Ellie‘s ambition is to follow in her parents’ footsteps, and create a business from riding and producing and selling horses.

‘I am so grateful to be able to take advantage of such an amazing opportunity to work with three incredible people. While things definitely didn’t go quite to plan last year I’m determined to try and complete an intermediate on Mandorior (Shrimp), with the main aim being Juniors or Young Riders! He might not be your typical sane eventer but he’s definitely got a lot of heart and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve this year! ‘

Maisie Hodge, 20, is from Huntley, Gloucestershire is a dressage rider, competing her two young horses,Terry and Aero. Maisie has competed Terry successfully at Elementary last year and is moving up to Medium with him, once Covid restrictions are lifted. With Aero she is planning to start to build up some experience together and get out competing.

‘I’m so excited to have the support from Jo, Nic and Natasha this coming year, I know it will be invaluable in helping me reach my goals. My main goal is to train Terry to PSG with the dream of competing at a CDI at the end of the year. With Aero, I’m looking forward to getting more experience training together and starting our competitive journey too.’

We first met the British para-equestrian and Olympic gold medallist, Natasha Baker MBE, in 2013 when she kindly agreed to launch our new Equine Photography business at Whatley Manor. We were immediately blown away by Natasha’s inspirational outlook on life. We loved her down-to-earth personality, her incredible sense of fun, and of course, her deep passion for horses.

In 2014, she agreed to mentor our Young Riders and we began sponsoring her too. To say we love working with Natasha is an understatement! We photograph her a few times a year and each time we meet it’s fun, creative and different.

It’s an honour to be a part of her journey, and to have her be part of ours!

We’ve long been aware of the stunning beauty and stature of Westonbirt school from shooting weddings there over the years. We’ve also been fortunate to get to know some of the Equestrian team members through our equine photography in the Cotswolds, and our photoshoots with several young riders from the school. So when one of the mums mentioned that the school team was looking for a sponsor, we jumped at the chance!

We did our first shoot with the school team and their ponies, in the stunning grounds of the school, back in 2018 on a wintery February day, and we haven’t looked back.
We love the team’s passion and commitment to their sport – small and mighty!

We first met Amelia at Kemble Pony Club show in 2013, when she was just 11 and riding her 12hh pony ‘Hercules’. Something about this cheeky pony caught my eye across the field and we ended up chatting with Amelia and her mum and dad Helen and Andy. Helen & Millie offered to model for us for some photoshoots with their horses, and a few years down the line, Amelia then asked us if we would sponsor her. We were impressed with the novelty of her idea – we didn’t know of any other sponsorship of young riders –  we and said yes. This is where our Young Sponsored Rider programme began, and its been wonderful to be a part of Amelia’s journey with her horses since then.

Now 19 years old, Amelia is competing at Intermediate on her mare ‘Couraguneen Jennie’. She told us:

“2020 was a very tough year,  however we ended the year at Bicton Internationall, finishing 2nd in a very hot open section. This season I hope to run Jennie at Intermediate with the goal to compete our first 3* in the near future.”

Its an honour to sponsor Amelia, and we’re excited to see what the next few years hold for this talented duo!

Charlotte was one of our 2018 Young Sponsored Riders. We were super impressed with the entry she submitted to our Young Sponsored Rider competition and loved her total passion and commitment to her sport.

Having sponsored Charlotte for a year, we felt we wanted to keep our connection with her and continue the sponsorship. Eventing, we know, can be a really tough sport in so many ways, we know Charlotte has the true grit and determination needed to get on in her chosen sport!

Charlotte is currently competing at Novice, Intermediate and CCI3* with her string of competition horses – Hugo, Dizzee, Henri & Carney.

Charlotte told us  “I’m really excited about getting all the horses out this year. My hope is to get Hugo out to more Internationals; Carney will be campaigned at Novice with the aim being to get him to at least one CCI2* by the end of the season. With Henri,  the plan is to build up his confidence and experience, as he is still very much a large baby! Dizzee will be aimed at a few Internationals and if he is consistent then he will attempt a few Intermediates as well!

This year we plan take it week by week, knuckle down with training and have some fun!”

We can’t wait to see what 2021 holds for Team Byrnes!

We’re excited to welcome Honor Redhouse to our team as our new Social Media Ambassador for 2021.
Honor is a 17-year-old showjumper based in Kent, competing with her 13-year-old KWPN mare ‘Dokyra Fortuna’ (Kira) up to 130cm.
We first met Honor in 2017 when we did an equine photoshoot with her, her family, and their horses. We got to know Honor & began following her journey. We were super impressed with her drive, passion, and total commitment to her sport.
She told us: “My biggest achievements to date have been jumping my first 130cm and winning south England’s young riders championship.  My goal this year is to jump some Junior classes and be placed at an International show.”

We’re excited to see Honor’s riding career progress with her horses.

Jo and Nic Hansford are based in Bristol, Bath, Somerset and are available to travel nationally and internationally.
